Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple and convenient way to assess whether your weight corresponds to your height. This indicator is widely used to determine if a person’s weight is within the normal range or if there are deviations indicating underweight or overweight.

How is BMI calculated

The BMI formula is straightforward:

BMI=Weight (kg)Height (m)2\text{BMI} = \frac{\text{Weight (kg)}}{\text{Height (m)}^2}

For example, if your weight is 70 kg and your height is 1.75 m, your BMI would be:

BMI=701.75222.86\text{BMI} = \frac{70}{1.75^2} \approx 22.86

With the ARIFMERA BMI Calculator, you can calculate this in just a few clicks.

What BMI values are considered normal

  • Below 16 - Severe underweight
  • 16.1–18.5 - Underweight
  • 18.6–24.9 - Normal weight
  • 25–29.9 - Overweight (pre-obesity)
  • 30–34.9 - Obesity class I
  • 35–39.9 - Obesity class II
  • Above 40 - Obesity class III

Why should you know your BMI

BMI helps assess health risks associated with weight. For instance, being overweight or obese may increase the likelihood of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other health issues. On the other hand, underweight can also indicate health problems.

Important to note

BMI is a general guideline. It does not account for individual factors such as muscle mass, body type, or age. For a more accurate health assessment, consult a healthcare professional.
